Life Transitions Coaching

Some changes we choose. Others choose us. Either way, a life transition pulls the ground out from under the routines, roles, and identity you’ve relied on, and leaves you in the in-between, not who you were, not yet who you’re becoming. If you’re standing in that in-between place, you don’t have to navigate it alone. I’m Beverly Zhai, an ICF-certified coach based in Toronto. I work with women moving through life’s turning points: career changes, an empty nest, relocation, caring for aging parents, the end of a role that defined you, who want clarity about what’s next and the confidence to build a life that feels like theirs again. If this sounds familiar…

  • A big change is here, or coming, and you can’t stop thinking “what now?”
  • The role that organized your life (job, full-time parent, caregiver) has shifted or ended
  • Everyone expects you to be fine, but inside you feel unanchored and unsure
  • You know you can’t go back, but the way forward isn’t clear yet

Here’s what changes with coaching

  • Clarity about what this transition is really asking of you, and what you want on the other side of it
  • Steadiness through the messy middle, so you can make decisions from calm instead of fear
  • A plan for your next chapter: priorities, boundaries, routines, and the woman you’re becoming

What life transition coaching actually is

Friends and family mean well, but they have their own hopes for your choices. A coach stands beside you with no agenda except yours: the decisions you have to make this month, the conversation you’re dreading, the life you’re quietly imagining for next year. Coaching is forward-looking and practical. We honour what you’re leaving behind, then we build what comes next, step by step.

What counts as a life transition?

If your life looks different than it did a year ago, or is about to, you’re probably in one. Transitions I coach women through include:
  • Career change: a new role, a promotion, job loss, or leaving the workforce
  • Single to partnered: a new relationship, moving in together, marriage or remarriage
  • Becoming a parent: a first child, another child, or adoption
  • Empty nest: the kids leaving home, and the quiet that follows
  • Divorce or separation: see my Divorce Coaching page for support specific to this
  • Retirement: stepping back from work, or planning to (see my Retirement Coaching page)
  • Relocation: a new city, a new country, or downsizing the family home
  • Caregiving: stepping in for aging parents, or supporting a partner through illness
  • Loss: of a parent, a partner, or someone central to your life
  • Health changes: yours or a loved one’s, and the reordering they force
  • Returning to work: after parental leave or a career break
  • The quiet one: no single event, just the growing sense that your life doesn’t fit anymore

How it works

1. Discovery session: A relaxed conversation about where you are and what you need. No pressure, no pitch. If we’re not the right fit, I’ll tell you honestly. 2. Clarity sessions: We work through what’s in front of you: the decision, the timing, the hard conversations, the letting go. 3. Rebuild plan: Together we design your next chapter with intention, so you’re not just getting through the change, you’re being shaped by it, on purpose. Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a life transition? More than people think. Divorce, retirement, a career change or job loss, kids leaving home, moving to a new city, becoming a caregiver for a parent, losing a spouse, a health change, going back to work after years away. If the life you had no longer fits and the next one is not built yet, you are in a transition.

My situation does not fit one neat label. Can coaching still help? Yes, and that is most people. Transitions rarely arrive one at a time; they come in bundles, like retirement plus a move plus a parent who suddenly needs care. Coaching does not need a label. We work with the actual pile in front of you.

How is life transitions coaching different from therapy? Therapy often focuses on healing the past. Coaching looks forward: decisions, clarity, and practical steps for the chapter you are entering. Many clients do both, with different purposes. If you are deciding what happens next, coaching is usually the right room.

Everything is changing at once. Where do we even start? We sort the pile together. What is urgent, what is yours to decide, what can wait, and what is not actually yours to carry. Most overwhelm comes from treating all of it as one giant problem. Once it is sorted into pieces, the first step is usually obvious.

Are sessions online, and how do I get started? All sessions are virtual, by video call, so you can meet from wherever you are. Start with a free 30 minute discovery call through the website. We will talk about the transition you are in and whether coaching is the right support for it. No pressure and no pitch.

The in-between is not the end of the story

Every transition carries the same quiet fear: that the best version of your life was the one before the change. Let me say this clearly: it is not too late, and you are not starting from zero. You’re starting from experience. The women who come through change stronger aren’t the ones who rushed it. They’re the ones who got support in the middle of it. If you’re ready for support, the next step is a conversation.
